The men of the city said to Elisha, “Look, the city has a good location, as our master can see. But the water is bad and the land doesn’t produce crops.” Elisha said, “Get me a new jar and put some salt in it.” So they got it. He went out to the spring and threw the salt in. Then he said, “This is what the LORD says, ‘I have purified this water. It will no longer cause death or fail to produce crops.”

2Kings 2:19-21 (NET)

The town refered to in our text was well located yet the land was sick and barren. This tells us that our situation is not determined by our position location or connection. The prophets were smart enough to know the source of their problem. The water was was bad. The book of James likens our words to a fountain (James 3:10&11). It shows us that our words is to our lives as the water is to that town of Jericho. Until something is done to heal the water of your life, your location, position, or connection can not help your condition. If the words of failure keeps on oozing from your mouth you cannot but fail eventually, no matter how positioned or connected you are.

When Elijah was approaches to help the condition of the city, he did not try to pray over the whole river. He went to the “source of the waters...” (Vs 21 Young Literal Translation). You cannot change the way you talk without changing the source of your speech. Jesus identifies the source of our words as our hearts. He says “…out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh…” (Matt 12:34).

The Divine Wisdom shows us that “as [a man] thinketh in his heart, so is he” (Prov. 23:7). So God counsels, “Do not let yourselves be like the people who belong to this world. But instead, let God change how you think...” (Romans 12:3 Easy English Version). Thus He provides you with the materials for your thought. He say, “…whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever thingsare pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things” (Phi 4:8)

Many people have sought for ways to change their life circumstances and order their lives aright. They wish they could live in health wealth and holiness. Having sought in vain they have concluded that it is unattainable. But as God’s children, we know that it is. God shows us the process:

Change your thought by the word of God and you will change your talk. Change your talk and you will change your circumstances. You will take charge of your life and determine your future.
