GRACE WHEREIN WE STAND: Conscience and Knowledge

Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.

1Corinthians 8:7

And none, O Lord, have perfect rest,
For none are wholly free from sin;
And they who fain would serve Thee best
Are conscious most of wrong within.”

The above is a verse from the hymn “At Even Ere the Sun was Set”, (one of the most pathetic hymns I’ve ever heard or sung). As a little boy, I always wondered how come our church was terribly a far cry from the picture the Bible paints. When I sought for answers, I was told that those ideals painted in the Scripture happened only with Jesus and His first apostles. Others told me that the church would only achieve such feat when we get to heaven. But as I grew I found that we had been lied to. The only reason Christians don’t experience perfect rest and total freedom from the dominion of sin and the oppression of the enemy is simply wrong knowledge.

The danger of wrong knowledge is that it is the cause of a defiled conscience. Too many blessed souls have gone down the way of perdition because they never knew God or His love. Because of the warped gospels they are taught, they are never able to attain righteousness “because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law… (Romans 9:32). ”For they  being ignorant of God’s righteousness and going about to establish their own righteousness have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God (Romans 10:3). They were told to straighten up themselves before being acceptable to God. Since they were never able to do so, it kept them away from God. That way, they remained vulnerable to the devil who took advantage of them. No wonder, even when they claim to be Christians, they’re never assured of their salvation and their Christian lives have been full of ups and downs

Many ministers have lost their ministries and in some cases, their lives to some errors from which they could not recover simply because their consciences remained defiled due to wrong knowledge. Had they known the love of God manifested by His grace; had they known that God was not imputing their sins to them, rather, that God was trying to reach out to them to reconcile them to Himself, maybe they’d have become the great generals of God today. The church too has not helped matters. Because of their wrong knowledge, they became ignorant of the devices of the devil and ended up assisting the devil in slaying their fallen soldiers and offerred their heads and crowns to the devil on the platter of ignorance (2Cor 2:11).

Brethren, eternal life is knowing God (John 17:3). A Christian without the knowledge of God, you’d die from a defiled conscience (Hosea 4:6). Conversely Grace is multiplied by knowledge 1 . Get knowledge, the knowledge of God and His boundless love you’d find rest for your soul (Matt 11:29)

LET US PRAY

Father thank you for your eternal and boundless love by which you’ve lavished grace on me

I receive the knowledge of God and of His love. Grace is multiplied unto me and I grow in grace.

Father open the eyes of your children that we may know you and your love
