RIGHTEOUSNESS: THE ROOT OF HOLINESS

Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.
2Tim 2:19

When we call upon the name of the Lord, we are saved. We receive instant gift of Righteousness. Righteousness is not holiness but it puts upon you the ability and responsibility to be holy. Righteousness is a state of being that God translate you into when you become a Christian. It is a garment that God gives to any one who believes in Jesus and confesses Him as Lord. It is not a function of what you did or did not do. It is not a function of your effort. It is given to you as a gift.

Holiness on the other hand is obedience to God. whatever you do or abstain from doing in obedience to the Word and will of God is a manifestation of holiness. So if God says to love your wife and never be violent on her, and in obedience to God you comply (her behaviour and character notwithstanding), you are holy to that extent. If God says to be submissive to your husband and in obedience to God (not just because your husband is a nice man) you comply irrespective of what he does or does not do, you are manifesting holiness. The same goes for a child who honours and obeys his parents irrespective of their attitude.

Holiness is a product of righteousness. A person who is not righteous cannot be holy because it is just not in his nature to be. That doesn’t mean he can not put up some pious facade, but true holiness is beyond his grasp (Rom 8:7-8). Righteousness being the nature of God is what gives us the ability to behave like God and do His word because righteousness enables us to receive the Holy Spirit who causes us to do the will and word of God (Ezek 36:27).

Righteousness is also the reason why God expects us to walk in holiness. A person that is robed in white suit is not expected to work in the sewer or chimney. Thus when God says to walk in holiness, He’s actually saying, “Don’t soil royal robes! Sin is a reproach, live as a dignitary that you are.” He’s saying, “come out from places where you may be soiled. That garment is for dignitaries conduct yourself as such”. He’s saying “live up to your name, become what you are born to be”. Its just for you to determine to walk in holiness and you will. Holiness is a characteristic of the righteous, a product of his real self, an innate characteristic of the righteous Live it out! Its in you.
