And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; 3 And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears
God wants you to have answers to every question of life. He doesn’t want you groping in the dark. Challenges are the spices of life, and they do come. But when they do, they should not swallow you up. The Lord will make a way where there seems to be no way. Often He does this by the operation of the Spirit of Counsel.
The Spirit of Counsel is the one that counseled Moses on the way out when the only water available for the Israelite was bitter. He shew him a tree which when thrown into the water made it sweet (Exodus 15:23-25). His counsel may not be conventional, but they always work wonders. David never lost a battle because he always engaged this Spirit of Counsel. He said “I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons” (Psalms 16:7). A very apt example is when the Philistines came against him two consecutive times in the same place. By the Spirit of counsel, God gave him two different battle formations each time and he had a resounding victory (2Sam 5:17-35). His methods may vary but it must work.
If you are a child of God, you should not be in a fix for too long. You don’t need to run from prophet to seers. Some have become victims of charlatans false prophets and soothsayers because they are estranged from the Spirit of counsel. In your job, marriage, ministry, you will encounter knotty and challenging situations. The Spirit of counsel will guide you. Just be filled with the Holy Spirit, and “And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it” (Isaiah 30:21).
He guides the Christian in various ways. But most often He guides through the inner witness–the still small voice. If you will long for him, study the word of God diligently trusting him with all your heart and not your own understanding; if you will pray in and with the Spirit; and declare the word of God to yourself, you will be sensitive to Him. Then when you need His help, inquire and be still in His presence. He’d lead you. But first, you must be filled with the Holy Spirit who only the children of God can receive.
