Spirituality Versus Superstition

Recently I had someone telling me that everything is not spirituality and as such, I shouldn’t try to spiritualize everything. The reason why people make such statements is because of the general misconception about spirituality. People don’t really know what is spirituality or what it is to be spiritual.

Many people have mistaken being spiritual with being superstitious and you cannot blame them. Many so-called spiritual churches actually present superstition as spirituality. Meanwhile, nothing can be further from the truth. Superstition is defined as “a widely held but irrational belief in supernatural influences, especially as leading to good or bad luck, or a practice based on such a belief”. On the other hand, spirituality–or being spiritual (from the true Christian standpoint) is simply living by the influence of the Holy Spirit having been trained to turn to, and be conscious of Him by the Word of God.

Make no mistake about it, spirituality is not even being conscious of the spirit realm, neither is it the ability to weild spiritual gifts. The Corinthian church had all the spiritual gifts (1Cor 1:5-7), yet Paul described them as canal because they did not walk in love (1Cor 3:3). True spirituality is simply walking in love. If you have all gifts and can see angels and demons and yet don’t walk in love, you’re not spiritual. You’re canal.

It is not possible to be superstitious and be spiritual. In fact superstition is a manifestation of canality which is self-centeredness. It produces fear and makes one behave irrationally and foolishly. On the other hand, true spirituality produces love and causes one to walk in faith. If you walk in the spirit, you’d activate the spirit of power, love and sound mind (2Tim 1:7).

True spirituality is the goal of true Christianity. It is the identity of true Christians. On the other hand, superstition is the power behind most religions. That’s one of the reasons why we always say Christianity is not a religion. In the wake of Corona virus pandemic, the foolishness behind religion and it’s enabler (superstition) is already being discovered. But for those of us in Christ, let us use the opportunity to learn from the Holy Spirit (by fellowshipping with Him in His Word) how to walk in the spirity and how to walk perpetually in love
