Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.
Yesterday, we started studying the fruit of Righteousness called the fruit of the spirit. We explain that if your born again and have received the righteousness of God (which defines your new nature) one of the results of being so righteous is the fruits of the spirit. When you give your life to Jesus and thereby become born again, one of the major things that happens to you is that the Spirit of Christ comes into you, joins Himself with you and become totally one with your spirit (1Cor 6:17). The effect is that you immediately have the exact nature and character of Jesus (which is love) in your regenerated spirit (Romans 5:5). The fruit of the spirit therefore is the character or attribute of Jesus that will be seen in you if you allow your spirit to call the shots in your life
Essentially, the the tendency or ability to manifest the fruit of the spirit which manifests in the various ways listed in Gal 5:22 is in you in all its fullness. Love, joy, peace, gentleness, kindness, etc are all in you since the day you got born again. You may then wonder why you don’t yet manifest all of them all the time. Your challenge is the state of your mind. Over the years your mind has been trained to operate by sensory perceptions. You’ve learn to learn from and react to the outside world. Now do you want to manifest this fruit of the Spirit, you’d need to train your mind (through meditation on the Word of God) to yield to the Spirit of Christ in your Spirit.
Meditation on the Word of God helps you to silence the noise in your mind, train your mind to receive information from your spirit and trains it to respond to the spirit realm where your spirit and the Spirit of Christ has preeminence. This training process is not palatable but it is worth it. It involves denying yourself (denying the mind what will gratify its usual sensual desire) and carrying your cross (it’s like saying, I’d rather died than gratifying my sensual desires). Then follow Jesus through your spirit.
As you remain faithful to this pattern of training, you’d manifest the fruit of the spirit effortlessly. You’d never have to struggle with habbits again. You’d walk in Holiness as a matter of course. This is how to live as a Christian. You don’t need new year resolutions. What you need is this training in righteousness. Remember, do you want to glorify God or you want to gratify your sensual desire? The former leads to life and peace but the other leads to death. The choice is yours. Be fruitful!
